Gael Tierra

The Boy with Ancient Eyes

His eyes look far older than his face.

He appears in the Ember Plains as a boy the same age as Luna and, year after year, he seems to grow at exactly the same pace she does. Tousled brown hair with a hint of moss, brown skin and eyes that look far older than his face. He smells of wet earth even under the sun, and his surname, Tierra, literally means Earth. Who is Gael, really? That question stays with Luna, and with the reader, across all five books.

Grandma Rosa

The Memory

The original Guardian and Luna's grandmother.

Rosa Mendoza, the original Guardian and Luna's grandmother on her mother's side. Silver hair in a braid, wise eyes with smile lines. She wears a shawl woven with natural symbols. Her own gift awoke when she was 12. She teaches Luna that science and intuition are two sides of the same coin.

Isabel Solari

The Geologist

The scientist of the house: she studies the movements of the Earth.

Luna's mother and a geologist at the National Institute of Geology. She studies the movements of the Earth with instruments, maps and a lot of patience, and her scientific knowledge complements her daughter's intuition. Decisive and practical, she always finds solutions where others see problems. In the Solari home, science and the gift walk side by side.

Tadeo Solari

The Rescuer

A rescuer of Equandia: he knows panic is more dangerous than the disaster itself.

Luna's father and a member of Equandia's Search and Rescue Team. He grew up in a family of artisans, between carpentry and blacksmithing, and that is why his hands can fix almost anything. He cracks jokes even in the worst moments, not because he doesn't grasp how serious things are, but because he discovered that calm rescues people too. He sees every problem as a puzzle to solve.

Mateo

The Classmate

The first classmate who decides to believe Luna.

Mateo is the freckled boy in the front row at the Spring Village school. At first he laughs at Luna like everyone else. But when the ground truly shakes, he is the first to come over and ask, without mocking, how she knew.

From then on he names himself her official helper. His motto: “I'd rather you warn us ten times and nothing happens than not warn us once and something does”. How far can a helper who never stops believing go? That unfolds book by book.
